Environmental Projects

The RS&H-designed Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s Runway and Associated Taxiways Reconstruction project earned Envision ‘Silver’ certification after being completed ahead of time, under budget, and diverting 99 percent of recyclable material from landfills.

Aviation

As the airport's prime design consultant, RS&H identified innovative solutions that minimized impacts so that the airport could continue to provide a world-class travel experience for its passengers.

Aviation

This innovative and cost-effective design-build project comprised the design and construction of 6.1 miles of roadway, including a limited access toll road and a non-tolled local road in Lake and Seminole Counties, Florida.

Transportation

RS&H provided onsite construction oversight and field engineering, allowing the airport and the FAA to be confident that the design intent was properly transferred from paper to pavement.

Aviation

RS&H was tasked by environmental agencies to design the ends of the bridge to minimize impacts to coastal wetlands in order for the project to be permitted. We had the challenge of designing bridge bent locations to avoid a submerged aquatic vegetation area under part of the bridge.

Focus Areas

Indoor Air Quality

Through focused surveys and tailored solutions, RS&H’s indoor air quality specialists help clients improve their work and learning environments. Our solutions improve occupant performance, reduce absences, and improve staff retention. Our proactive programs maintain peak office or classroom conditions and efficient building systems. Proactive programs provide the information necessary to prioritize and plan while focusing resources for optimal returns.

Regulatory Compliance Support

Our environmental professionals are committed to protecting organizations from the liability of non-compliance. We help public and private clients successfully navigate environmental compliance issues associated with federal, state, and international water, land, air, and waste regulations. As a trusted advisor to our clients, we maintain regulatory registries and develop compliance strategies for operational concerns that arise for the private sector, as well as federal, state, and local agencies. We work with clients to ensure organizations maintain compliance while enhancing overall environmental performance.

NEPA & State Environmental Review Documentation

From concept design and impact analyses to public involvement and interagency coordination, our inter-disciplinary teams offer the full range of expertise necessary to guide clients through a project’s environmental review process. Our comprehensive review documents thoroughly analyze alternatives, characterize the affected environment, and evaluate the impacts associated with a proposed action, providing agency and government officials with the information they need to make informed decisions.

Mitigation Banking

Dedicated to protecting and conserving the world’s natural resources, RS&H helps clients offset adverse impacts of projects through our highly specialized mitigation banking services. Our innovative solutions have resulted in new revenue streams for our clients while meeting and exceeding regulatory requirements and enhancing the surrounding environment. Our full range of mitigation banking services includes evaluation of potential sites, competition analysis, field studies, permitting, planning and design, agency coordination, and long-term management.

Assessment & Remediation

Drawing on our in-depth understanding of fractured bedrock, karst, and alluvial/coastal plain sediments, we characterize the subsurface environment to develop a cost-effective remedial strategy for pollutants, such as hydrocarbons, solvents, heavy metals, and others. Our assessment and remediation projects include work with the U.S. military, the federal government, U.S. oil and gas interests, private industry, and state and local governments. Our regulatory experience includes Superfund (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, CERCLA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and state administration remediation programs.

Ecological Services & Permitting

Working together with design professionals, our teams of biologists, ecologists, and wetland and wildlife management experts streamline the execution of projects while preserving and enhancing our natural ecosystems. We offer an in-depth experience with various ecosystems across the U.S. from alpine meadows to coral reefs and everything in between. Through a full range of services, including habitat assessments, threatened and endangered species surveys, and extensive field programs, we help our clients establish the environmental baselines of their projects, develop solutions for mitigating potential impacts, and coordinate the permitting needed to maintain their project schedules.

Why Risk Assessment is the Key to Project Procurement
September 13, 2023By Mike Davis, PE, DBIA

Projects inherently have risks. Some risks are high-stakes that could lead to major cost overruns or delays, while others are more minor that could lead to minor delays or changes to the scope of work.
