RS&H-designed St. Vincent’s Clinic Opens in Jacksonville’s Town Center

When St. Vincent’s Healthcare Town Center Clinic opened its doors to patients earlier this year, more than one door opened.

Some patients will enter to see their primary care doctors. Others who are battling acute conditions may enter the urgent care facility. Patients who may need an X-ray or CT scan or MRI won’t need to leave the facility at all.

Such is the new model for St. Vincent’s new facility, which is really three clinics under one roof.

The St. Vincent’s Town Center Clinic is located on a 1.4-acre parcel along Gate Parkway within a new land development. This free-standing 14,800-square-foot building delivers primary care, urgent care, consolidated laboratory services, and Optimal Imaging – a partner to St. Vincent’s parent company, Ascension Health. The 3,300-square-foot Imaging suite provides MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, and mammography services.

“We have seen a growing trend of urgent care facilities to have imaging services on site, but to have urgent and primary care and imaging services is something new,” said RS&H Project Manager Erin Burres, IIDA, NCIDQ. “What you ultimately end up with is a facility that is more convenient for patients.”

St. Vincent’s HealthCare, an Ascension Health site of care, is a faith-based, not-for-profit health system that has served the people of Jacksonville and the surrounding communities since 1873. From its humble beginning to its current status as a regional healthcare system, St. Vincent’s Healthcare is widely recognized for delivering quality, compassionate care.

RS&H Lead Designer Michael Compton, AIA, EDAC, LEED AP, honed in on that reputation when he began working on the center. The exterior of the building is designed to exude the confidence and high standard of care provided by St. Vincent’s.

The use of glass, metal panel, and stucco are reinforcing a brand awareness developed by the ministry, while a canted glass façade and striking metal and wood canopy defines the entry. The interior carries through the ministry’s standard materials to include the incorporation of Herman Miller modular casework and furniture throughout.

“It’s really a beautiful design that Mike created,” Burres said. “It’s a unique design for Ascension, and it’s been incredibly well received so far.”

The accolades were echoed by Ascension Health’s leadership team, including Chief Operating Officer Bill Mayher.

“RS&H designed an exceptional building that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional,” Mayher said. “Our providers and patients love the new health center.”

To get to the final design, the RS&H team worked with all parties to make sure every critical need was met.

“We wanted to create the ideal facility, which means we needed multiple meetings with everyone from doctors to vendors to IT to engineers and designers,” Burres said. “Because there were so many stakeholders, it was important to have everyone at the table to ensure the building as a whole was successful.

“This project in particular required all disciplines to be hands-on. Everyone just kept pushing forward until everything was just right.”
