[Redmond, Ore.] RS&H proudly joined the City of Redmond in celebrating the groundbreaking of the $180 million terminal expansion project at Redmond Municipal Airport. This milestone marks the beginning of an ambitious endeavor to enhance the airport’s capacity, improve passenger experience, and align with the region’s sustained growth in Central Oregon.

The expansion will add more than 80,000 square feet to the terminal, including seven new jet bridges, expanded waiting and concession areas, and additional seating to accommodate increasing passenger traffic. A centerpiece of the expansion is the focus on enhanced accessibility and operational efficiency, ensuring the airport meets both current demand and future growth. Construction is expected to continue through January 2028.

RS&H, a national employee-owned architecture, engineering, and consulting firm, has played an integral role in this effort. The firm was selected to execute the design and guide the terminal development process following the completion of the airport’s Terminal Area Concept Plan (TACP) in 2021. RS&H’s Lead Architect Ryan Johnson, AIA, NCARB, who’s been actively involved with the airport’s efforts since the inception of the TACP development, said, “This has been a remarkable journey from concept to design for me, and it’s rewarding to see the vision take shape to serve Central Oregon’s growth.”

“This project goes beyond simply expanding a terminal—we’re creating a gateway that is as forward-thinking as the region it serves,” said Kevin Stockton, AIA, PE, NCARB, Vice President and Aviation/Transportation Architecture Market Leader for the Western Region at RS&H. “Partnering with the City of Redmond allows us to bring innovative solutions to life while supporting the community’s sustained economic momentum.”

The expansion highlights Redmond’s continued evolution as a hub for Central Oregon. Recent growth in tourism, business development, and population has placed an increasing demand on the airport, which serves major airlines including Alaska, Delta, United and others. The new facility is designed to address those needs while creating over 100 full-time jobs and retaining local contractors to complete nearly 70% of the work.

Geoffrey Chevin, AIA, NCARB, DBIA, project manager for the expansion project, emphasized the importance of collaboration. “Bringing together a shared vision with the City of Redmond, Skanska, Hennebery Eddy Architects, Morrison-Maierle Engineering and our team has been key to advancing this project. Our goal is to create a terminal that supports long-term growth and delivers meaningful travel experiences for passengers.”

The expanded terminal was designed and will be constructed to meet the requirements for LEED Silver Certification
