Andrew Taylor is Senior Inspector based out of the Key West office who’s following in his father’s footsteps as a well-respected RS&H associate. He’s grateful for the new experiences and real-life applications that RS&H provides and is currently working towards his Special Steel Inspector certification. Hear straight from Andrew in this month’s RS&H Voices.
My dad works for the company, he’s been with RS&H for over 25 years, so that drew me here initially. I like the structure of the company and I love the people I work with. I’ve worked with the same people for the majority of the five years that I’ve been here.
I’m most proud of the fact that I went back to school. I enrolled to study for my Civil Engineering degree, with R&H’s help. I’m only one year in so far, but I already know that I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without RS&H.
I’ve been able to gain a lot of knowledge [about the AEC industry] and earn certifications in a very, very diverse field. From bridges to roadways to traffic signals, I’ve been able to branch out and earn a lot of certifications for a lot of very different projects.
Right now, I’m working to get my Special Steel Inspector certification. We have a project on the Navy base down here in Key West, so I’m working to be qualified to do special steel inspections for that project.
My dad, Jackson Taylor, and Jacki Hart, the Southeast Florida Area Leader, are my two biggest mentors.
There are a ton of RS&H related activities that get me involved with the community. For example, a few weeks ago we went to a local school for a ribbon cutting ceremony to open a new section of the building. They wanted to set a world record for the most people dancing to the “Baby Shark” song. So, we showed up with our RS&H hardhats on, with shark fins attached, and got involved with everyone down there.
My number one goal right now is to get this Special Steel Inspector certification, but in the next couple of years I hope to finish my Civil Engineering degree and gain more experience in bride inspections. I haven’t worked on much bridge inspection in the past, but I think that’s where I’d like to steer my career.
I don’t know if I have a favorite, but the most recent was on a big project down here in Key West. It was a challenging project because we had to work with Monroe County, the City of Key West Department of Transportation, and FDOT at the same time.
I like the Creativity pillar, but I also align with the Driven to Care essence. I try to emphasize a lot of RS&H’s practices in my daily life, such as worksite safety. I like the fact that the company takes care of its employees.
For me, since I live in The Florida Keys, I enjoy anything to do with the ocean. It’s as simple as eating a fresh fish sandwich by the water or just sitting by the water and enjoying the view. It’s great that most of the RS&H projects down here are right by the water.
I have three dogs. I love taking my dogs on my boat, driving them out to the islands so that they can run around and swim. We love fishing, too. The only time I’m not fishing is when I’m at a Miami Marlis home game with my dad. We never miss a home game.
