We all want clean water to drink, healthy food to eat, clean air to breathe, and nature that can be appreciated. We all enjoy the natural resources in life, and we can take a few steps each day to make sure future generations will too.
Geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, wind generators, and rainwater collection cisterns are great ways to conserve our natural resources. However, the costs of these systems can be prohibitive. What can we do to help conserve our natural resources?
First, conservation can be defined as the wise use or careful utilization of a natural resource to prevent depletion. That does not mean that you should quit taking a bath or using the air conditioner at home, but it does mean that you can limit water and energy usage.
Tips To Follow Each Day To Help Conserve Our Natural Resources
- Turn the thermostat up two degrees and turn on the ceiling fans.
- Water plants with a watering can instead of a sprinkler. More water feeds the plant and less water is used overall.
- Recycle if possible. Some cities and counties have recycling programs that do not cost anything and do not require separation of materials.
- Water the lawn during the cooler parts of the day to avoid loss of water from evaporation and wind.
- Grow a little garden of herbs, vegetables, and fruits.
- Use lawn additives such as fertilizer, lime, fungicides, pesticides, etc. only as needed. The excess washes down the storm drain or into the nearest water source and into our water supplies, thus requiring additional filtering.
